Story Behind Every Piece
A Life Extraordinary (this is from Moooi – I love it but am struggling to come up with something similar)
Founded in 2003 by Lara Tatley, "toguna" was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to create a meeting place for creative minds, where exceptional African craftsmanship could be celebrated, preserved, and shared with the world. More than a showroom, Lara imagined a space built on respect — where artisans, traders, collectors, designers, and customers could connect through storytelling, authenticity, and sustainable collaboration.
The name “togu’na” comes from the traditional meeting house found in the centre of Dogon villages in Mali. These communal spaces were intentionally designed with low ceilings so that no one could stand in anger or dominate the conversation. Instead, dialogue, respect, and thoughtful collaboration prevailed. This philosophy remains at the heart of everything we do.
For more than two decades, "toguna" has remained at the forefront of African design intervention, curating authentic handcrafted décor, furniture, textiles, artefacts, and accessories that seamlessly bridge heritage and contemporary living. Our collections are sophisticated yet soulful — grounded in cultural integrity while designed to surprise, delight, and inspire modern interiors around the world.
In 2026, under the new ownership of Zaheer and Madiha, toguna enters an exciting new chapter. With a shared passion for design, storytelling, and contemporary African living, they are evolving the brand with a more refined and modern aesthetic while remaining deeply committed to its original ethos of authenticity, sustainability, and respect for craftsmanship. Their vision brings together timeless African artistry with elevated contemporary interiors — creating collections that feel both globally sophisticated and unmistakably African.
We do not tell craftspeople what to make. Instead, we seek out what has already been created — pieces shaped by instinct, tradition, history, and individual artistic expression. Through careful curation and subtle design intervention, we honour the integrity of every object while allowing it to transition beautifully into contemporary spaces.
Every piece at toguna carries the imprint of many hands and many stories. From the artisan who first created it, to the trader who carried it across borders, to our own meticulous process of hand-selection, restoration, fumigation, preservation, packing, and shipping — each item undergoes an extraordinary journey before arriving in your home.
We believe authentic African craftsmanship should outlast everyday interiors. Our collections transcend their functional past to define spaces with warmth, texture, personality, and a sense of discovery. They are objects designed not only to decorate, but to evoke emotion, provoke conversation, and preserve cultural memory.
